We are excited to share our amazing conversation with nationally acclaimed makeup artist Christina Choi, founder of CHRISTINA CHOI COSMETICS, a lifestyle beauty brand for the modern woman. She has taken her years of industry experience and personal beauty struggles to create a makeup line that celebrates the natural beauty of women of diverse ethnic backgrounds, hence the brand's mantra: "Celebrate your unique beauty." Today, Christina speaks candidly about her journey of beauty and gives brides her expert makeup advice on how to look stunning on their wedding day.
WHAT MAKES CHRISTINA CHOI COSMETICS DIFFERENT?
Through my experience of doing makeup on thousands of women across the country, I got to hear what women were looking for. I had taken that experience as well as my years of experience in the industry to create a line that I truly believe in and that works with all different skin tones. I really wanted to make sure that it complimented an Asian-American skin tone, as well as an African-American skin tone, and a Caucasian/fair skin tone. I really wanted the colors to be versatile and made of the highest-level ingredients, like vitamins C and E. All of our eyeshadows are hypoallergenic, 100% fragrance-free, and infused with antioxidants and natural ingredients.
I feel that with current makeup trends, there is a lack of focus on natural beauty. Our mantra is “Celebrate your unique beauty.” Many women don’t wear makeup because they are intimated or because they have had it done badly at a makeup counter. I want women to feel comfortable with makeup on. I focus on creating a natural look that helps women look like the best versions of themselves. This helps them feel confident and comfortable, which in turn helps them look their best.
WHO IS YOUR INSPIRATION?
I can definitely say my grandmother. I don’t think there’s been one day I’ve seen her without her makeup on. Even now at 88, she still wears her makeup. She was born and raised in Seoul, Korea, during the Korean War, but she really takes great care of herself, and takes pride in how she looks. She was a true fashionista — and still is. My grandmother has been very influential in my career.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE NEW BRIDAL MAKEUP TRENDS?
One trend I see is brides wanting healthy, dewy-looking skin. I’m also getting requests for the rose gold makeup trend. I’m actually helping a bride next month and doing a beautiful rose gold eye makeup look using our Champagne Bubbles and Amorous eyeshadows. It’s stunning!
WHAT MAKEUP ESSENTIALS DOES CHRISTINA CHOI CARRY IN HER PURSE?
I always carry Apricot Rum Luxe Cream Crayon in my purse. This shade is the best go to lip color ever and compliments ALL skin tones.
WHAT SHOULD A BRIDE CARRY IN HER (EMERGENCY) MAKEUP KIT FOR THE BIG DAY?
Definitely tissues for the emotional bride. Also a must are our Luxe Cream Crayons and Luxury Glosses along with blotting papers for quick touch ups before portraits and before and after the ceremony. This will be key, as you want your makeup to look refreshed, polished and on point for photography. You will have these photos for a lifetime!
WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR CHRISTINA CHOI COSMETICS?
We just opened up a makeup studio in Union Square, San Francisco. It’s a beautiful modern space. You can sip some champagne, get your makeup done while looking out at the view of Union Square. The focus is to give my clients, particularly our brides, one-on-one time with me in a private modern studio without the distractions.
DO YOU HAVE ANY DO'S AND DONTS FOR BRIDES DOING THEIR OWN MAKEUP ON THEIR WEDDING DAY?
Leave it to the professionals! Don’t try and do your own makeup, especially on one of the biggest days of your life. Professional makeup artists come with an arsenal of products that are geared specifically for a special occasion, such as a wedding. Book your wedding makeup artist early as they can book up months in advance. I strongly suggest doing a makeup triAl as well. This will give you an idea of the style of the makeup artist and will prevent any surprises on the day of.
If you are having a destination wedding and cannot get a professional, I highly suggest booking a “Wedding DIY Makeup Lesson” with me. Book early so you have enough time to practice your bridal look ahead of time. The DIY makeup lesson is very important so that the brides can still look great and have the confidence of having a custom and professionally designed look for their big day.
MAKEUP CAN BE VERY EXPENSIVE, DO YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS ON HOW TO MANAGE THE COSTS?
This is the key driver of developing CCC. I designed the products to be multi-functional and affordable. For example, Chai and Namu Eyeshadows are beautiful as eyeshadows, eyeliners, and eyebrow colors as well. Luxe Cream Crayons function as lipliners and lipsticks all-in-one. Eyeshadows like Creamsicle and Amorous are also designed to apply to the cheeks as a blush. Even our BB Cream acts as an SPF 30 sunscreen, a primer, a foundation, and a tinted-moisturizer. I have had clients rave about reducing their previously overstuffed makeup bags to a few select CCC essentials that they can use daily. CCC is makeup simplified!
ANY ADDITIONAL ADVICE ON BRIDAL MAKEUP?
Having a bridal look that translates great in person and also in photography is critical. This comes from having an experienced artist help you on your wedding day. Wedding makeup is an investment. The right wedding makeup helps compliment the wedding gown, the décor, and allows photography to look even better. When done right, the bride will look amazing from head-to-toe!
